Concert in memory of the November pogroms 1938

75 Years of Israel

The founding of the State of Israel in 1948 was a direct consequence of the Holocaust. Cultural life in the young state was mainly shaped by emigrants from Europe, many of whom had had to flee political persecution and the Holocaust. Composers such as Joachim Stutschewsky or Paul Ben-Haim played a major role in building up musical life. Abel Ehrlich, Mordecai Seter, Ben-Zion Orgad and Hanoch Jacoby are also among the influential musical personalities of the early years, some of them in official positions, and most of the composers of the second and third generation went to school with them. But not only "historical" music, also music of the present is represented in our programme. Yuri Povolotsky and Ella Milch-Sheriff are two examples of completely different compositional styles and emancipation from the "founding fathers".

Fairy tales, stories, legends and sagas have always been an important and rich source for music. Many composers have used them as inspiration and models, not only for operas but also in orchestral and chamber music. In our programme, we invite you on a journey into the realm of fantasy with fairytale-like music by Robert Schumann, Leoš Janáček, Johan Amberg and from Engelbert Humperdinck's opera "Hansel and Gretel".

Concert auf der Wieden - new date

2022 is not only the 125th anniversary of Johannes Brahms' death, but also the 150th birthday of Paul Juon.

Not much needs to be said about Brahms, a Viennese by choice. He is represented in the programme with his Trio op.114 - next to Beethoven's "Gassenhauer" Trio probably the most famous work for this instrumentation - as well as with some of his Hungarian Dances.

Paul Juon, on the other hand, is still an unknown quantity in concert life. The Trio Miniatures and the Fairy Tale op.8 are an opportunity to rediscover his imagination and compositional skills and should make you want to hear more by this unjustly forgotten composer.

Attention: The concert already starts at 6 pm!

Concert in memory of the November pogroms 1938

Between 7 and 13 November 1938, violent riots organised and directed by the Nazi regime against the Jewish population took place throughout Germany and Austria, reaching their climax on the night of 9 to 10 November. Thousands of synagogues, prayer houses, shops, homes and Jewish cemeteries were stormed and destroyed. Several hundred Jews were murdered, at least 300 committed suicide. More than 30,000 Jews were arrested and interned, the first deportations to concentration camps followed. The November pogroms marked the beginning of the systematic expulsion and oppression of the Jewish population, culminating in their complete annihilation in the Holocaust.

How was Beethoven able to continue composing after he had lost his hearing? How did he feel about the music he could no longer hear? As early as 1801, at the age of 31, Beethoven described his symptoms: hearing loss with loss of high frequencies and reduced speech intelligibility, agonising ringing in the ears (tinnitus), distortions and, at the same time, hypersensitivity to sound. In the last years of his life he was deaf, simply a disaster for the brilliant musician.

The Cello Sonata op.102/2 was written in the crisis year of 1815, at the beginning of his late creative period. The Trio op.38, Beethoven's own arrangement of his famous Septet op.20, is dedicated to the Viennese doctor Johann Adam Schmidt, with whom he was treated for his incipient hearing disorder.

The programme opens with "Before Beethoven" by Karl Kohn. The title is due to the simple fact that this trio was played before Beethoven's famous "Gassenhauer" trio at its premiere in 1989. In terms of content, there are no explicit references to this particular work; the piece also exists on its own. However, individual motifs may well evoke associations with Beethoven's chamber music.

Tickets 17€, pupils/students (up to 26 yrs.)

life was so easy - Music and Exile

Alexander Wagendristel's new trio quotes Schoenberg's Piano Concerto not only in its title ("life was so easy" is found in Schoenberg's sketches for this concerto), but the basic line of this work is also clearly audible in a passage towards the end of the trio. But important for Wagendristel - and for us - is also the reference to the present: in the 1930s, people like Schönberg had to emigrate from Europe to escape extermination. Today, people are fleeing to Europe for the same reason. How do we deal with this and where do we stand today? Is history repeating itself?

With the proclamation of the Republic of Austria on 12 November 1918, women in Austria finally also received the universal and equal right to vote, which they were able to exercise for the first time at the elections to the Constituent National Assembly in 1919. For the 100th anniversary of this milestone on the way to equality, we have perform a programme exclusively with female composers.

80 years ago, on 1 September 1939, the Second World War began with the invasion of Poland, which triggered one of the largest migratory movements in history. Alexander Wagendristel's new trio "life was so easy", which will be premiered at this concert, gives reason to deal with the topic of emigration then and now.

1918 - Demise and new beginning

World War I was the fundamental catastrophe of the 20th century, where technical warfare, weapons of mass destruction, but also nationalism and racial fanaticism came to a first climax. Many musicians and composers were directly affacted by the war, they had to serve as soldiers, like Fritz Kreisler or Hans Gál, were wounded or killed. Some had to emigrate, others took profit from arousing nationalism, that condemned the foreign and only allowed what was own.
The end of the war 100 years ago led to the collapse of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, but also awoke hopefor a better, peaceful and democratic future.
